Fisherfolk of Morjim oppose proposed swim zone markings
Mapusa: Morjim fisherfolk have opposed the proposed swimming zone at Morjim beach, saying the zone is a prime fishing area.
Fisherfolk said that the tourism department’s ropes and floaters marking the swimming zone at Vitthaldas Wada, Morjim, create hurdles in casting fishing nets and cause entanglement.
“We have no issues in designating the area as a swimming zone, but marking it with the rope creates problems with fishing and net casting,” said fisherman Rony Fernandes, adding that early morning fishing may cause net damage as ropes and floaters are not visible.
Another fisherman said no drownings have occurred in the area, as it is a safe swimming zone and the floaters are a disturbance and must be removed.
“The department has to understand that it is a traditional fishing zone. I have spoken to the department and have told them to employ more lifeguards and remove the zone markings,” local MLA Jit Arolkar said.
