Goa gets only Rs 482cr budgetary allocation, but Konkan Railway gears up for major infra boost
Margao: Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday announced that Goa has been allocated Rs 482 crore for the financial year 2025-26 in the Budget. The budgetary allocation for Goa is for the projects to be executed by the South Western Railway as well as Konkan Railway. Goa is connected by both Konkan and South Western Railway networks.
“In Goa, there is a very special condition because Konkan Railway is a company— a corporation limited. The Indian Railway Budget portion is very small in Goa,” said Vaishnaw. While Karnataka was allocated Rs 7,564 crore, Tamil Nadu got an allocation of Rs 6,626 crore, and Kerala Rs 3,042 crores in the Railway Budget. “However, the total investment in Goa (on completed and ongoing projects like track doubling, route electrification, track renewal, station redevelopment works, etc.) is going to be Rs 5,696 crores,” Vaishnav said while addressing the press through video conferencing.
Nevertheless, Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) has unveiled ambitious plans to expand its network and increase operational capacity through strategic development projects. Addressing reporters later, Joseph George, executive director, business development of KRCL, highlighted a comprehensive investment strategy that includes developing new stations, creating additional track infrastructure, and enhancing existing facilities.
The Railways has already identified Margao station for redevelopment. He said that conceptual plans were being finalised in consultation with the ministry of railways, with an emphasis on meeting both city requirements and railway operational needs. Land availability for future expansion isn’t a concern for KRCL, with the corporation already in possession of secured spaces for track doubling, potential tunnels, and bridge realignments. The development strategy includes creating new stations in locations like Sarzora, Neura, and Mayem, which are expected to be implemented in phased approaches.

"I frequently travel on the Konkan Railway route and believe there is an urgent need for track doubling. The existing single line, starting 25 years ago, is unable to handle the increasing traffic efficiently. Since KRCL operates as a corporation, it doesn't benefit much from the central budget. It’s high time to consider merging Konkan Railway with Indian Railways to prioritize funding for track doubling and the Kolhapur-Vaibhavwadi route."Read allPost comment
