Accompanied by a team of officials, Sawant assessed the progress and plans for the educational facilities of the upcoming fisheries institute at the site.

“Our efforts aim to modernise the centre’s facilities, introduce advanced training modules, and promote innovative practices that support the local fishing community,” said Sawant.

At the site, the existing Fisheries Training Centre will be upgraded into a professional college, equipped with modern classrooms, specialised departments under fisheries science, laboratories, and all the other necessary infrastructure, Sawant said.

Sawant emphasised the urgency of the project, directing officials to aim for an operational start by the upcoming academic year.

“A portion of the land currently belongs to the directorate of fisheries and partly belongs to the directorate of animal husbandry and veterinary services, which will be transferred to the State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI). Consequently, the fisheries institute will operate under the directorate of agriculture,” said director of agriculture, Sandeep Faldesai.

TOI reported on Sep 28, 2022, that govt was considering offering a degree in pisciculture—an announcement made by Sawant at the inauguration of the Goa Agriculture College at Ela Farm. However, the Goa Agriculture College was set up inside a hall at the Ela Farm. Sawant then promised to build a new building to accommodate students.
