Goa zilla panchayat polls results: Congress, BJP gain in different pockets; Independent candidate Radhika wins Arambol seat
GOA: Counting of votes for Goa’s rural zilla panchayat (ZP) elections is underway on Monday across 14 centres—six in North Goa and eight in South Goa—following polling on Saturday, when over 6 lakh voters cast their ballots.
Results from key constituencies highlight a mixed verdict with gains for the Congress, BJP, and independents.
Here are the latest updates:
*BJP wins Reis Magos seat.
* BJP wins Dharbandora and Barcem seats, Congress gets Nuvem and Curtorim.
* BJP wins 9 seats, Congress secures 3
In Goa Zilla Panchayat election results, the BJP is leading with victories in nine seats. The Congress has won three seats so far, while the RGP and MGP have secured one seat each. Independent candidates have also managed to win one seat. Vote counting is still underway.
* BJP suffers another setback as it loses the Guirdolim ZP seat to the Congress, which fielded rebel candidate Sanjay Velip, who switched sides ahead of the polls.
* BJP scrapes through in Rivona, winning the seat by a narrow margin of 14 votes, even as the Goa Forward Party demands a recount after finishing close behind.
* Counting underway across 14 centres — six in North Goa and eight in South Goa — after polling saw over 6 lakh voters participate.
* Congress leads in Calangute and Santa Cruz ZP constituencies, despite both being represented by BJP MLAs in the assembly.
* Congress scores a surprise win in Davorlim, an unexpected gain in the rural belt.
* BJP retains Xeldem, the home turf of Goa Congress chief Amit Patkar.
* Independent Radhika Paleykar defeats the BJP–MGP alliance candidate in Arambol.
* BJP wins in Sanvordem, Latambarcem (Padmakar Malik) and Calangute (Franzilia Rodrigues).
* BJP candidate Maheswar Govekar emerges victorious from the Siolim ZP seat.
* Several seats witnessed multi-cornered contests, with leaders like Vijai Sardesai (Goa Forward Party) and Inacina Luis Pinto (Raia) in the fray.
* High voter turnout, the highest since 2005, is a defining feature of these ZP elections.
Goa Forward Party Chief Vijai Sardesai and Raia candidate Inacina Luis Pinto also contested, reflecting the multi-cornered nature of several contests.
Political observers have noted the high voter turnout—the highest since these second-tier panchayat elections began in 2005—as a key feature of this election. Commentator Cleofato Coutinho said, “Normally, a high voter turnout is viewed as a vote against government. However, over the past four to five years, we’ve witnessed pro-incumbency, especially in elections with a strong local flavour.”
The surge in participation is also attributed to vigorous campaigning by MLAs, including opposition leaders.
Although the ZP results may not directly alter Goa’s political landscape, they provide a clear picture of rural voter sentiment and party popularity ahead of the assembly elections. Analysts say the outcome could impact the government’s handling of ongoing issues, including the Arpora fire tragedy, the cash-for-jobs scam, illegal land conversions, and the rising crime rate.
“Whether the government chooses to continue on its current path or take corrective measures will hinge partly on the ZP results,” said a political commentator.
Counting is ongoing, and full results are expected to be declared later in the day.
