Trekkers find tigress carcass in reserve forest near Sawantwadi

Keri: A tigress was found dead in a water-filled pit at Satbav, which is part of the Tiracol river basin, within the reserve forest of Dabhil near Sawantwadi, Maharashtra. The cause of the death is yet to be ascertained.

The heavily decomposed carcass was spotted by two trekkers, Prasad Gawade and Sachin Ghadi, who immediately alerted officials of Sawantwadi’s forest division.

Deputy conservator of forests, Navkishor Reddy, told TOI that forest officials rushed to the spot and conducted a panchnama, following which the carcass was burnt. “We have installed a camera trap inside the reserve forest. Further investigation is on to ascertain the cause of tigress’ death,” he said.

A fortnight ago, locals from Dabhil-Sarmale had spotted a tigress prowling the area with two cubs. However, it is yet to be confirmed if it is the same tigress that was later found dead.
