Gurgaon civc body sets May 31 deadline to finish works at 155 waterlogging hotspots
Gurgaon: MCG has set May 31 as the deadline to complete works at 155 waterlogging-prone locations across the city ahead of the monsoon season, officials said on Wednesday.
The deadline was reviewed during a meeting of the sewerage and monsoon management cells chaired by municipal commissioner Pradeep Dahiya, where officials assessed preparedness for flooding, sewer overflow and drainage failures during the rains.
The identified locations include 41 hyper-critical, 54 medium-category and 60 general-category waterlogging spots. The locations include sectors 52, 9, 10 and 21, along with Khandsa, Basai and Kadipur. Officials said desilting, sewer cleaning, drainage improvement and related works are underway and are expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Dahiya also reviewed the status of stormwater drain cleaning. According to officials, the city has 607km of stormwater drains, of which cleaning work on 408.6km has been completed. The remaining work is scheduled to be finished by June 15.
MCG said 40 sewerage-critical points were identified after last year’s monsoon season. Work at 23 locations has been completed, while the work at the remaining sites is in progress.
The civic body has arranged 109 pumps and around 63 suction tankers for emergency response. Officials said 56 tenders related to sewer cleaning and maintenance have also been issued.
As part of the preparedness plan, the corporation has mapped resources ward-wise and planned deployment of 269 sewer workers, 84 suction tankers, 89 tractor-mounted pumps and 119 beldars (manual labourers) across the city.
During the meeting, Dahiya directed officials to complete pending works related to stormwater drains, sewer lines, catchment areas and waterlogging hotspots within fixed timelines. “The horticulture department has been asked to improve rainwater drainage in parks and green belts, while the electrical wing has been directed to inspect streetlights and electrical connections before the monsoon”, said Dahiya.
Officials added that MCG plans to monitor waterlogging through around 700 CCTV cameras installed across the city and is developing a centralised monitoring system with flood-depth sensors and a flood database to track complaints and flooding incidents.
Officials said RWAs and local organisations would also be asked to report waterlogging and infrastructure-related problems during the monsoon.
