Deepika Chouhan, a 32-year-old employee of Indian Bank, observed fast on Karva Chauth, but met her end just hours later following a quarrel with her husband, Vikram Chouhan, according to the complaint filed by Deepika’s father Harikishan Ahuja, who lives in Chandigarh.

Ahuja said Deepika and Vikram’s was a love marriage in 2013, after some years of courtship. The couple had a four-year-old daughter and a six-month-old son. “Of late, Vikram had developed a relationship with another woman, who is married with children, and lives in the same society. She used to frequent the couple’s apartment, causing a discord between Deepika and Vikram,” Ahuja alleged. However, the police are yet to confirm the presence of another woman in the flat at the time.

The initial probe, according to police, has confirmed that Vikram was having an affair with a woman living in the same society. “According to the complaint, she used to visit Vikram’s house, and this triggered a discord between Vikram and Deepika,” said sub-inspector Vinay, the investigating officer and the in-charge of Gwalpahari police outpost. A resident of the society, who wished to remain anonymous, said they had heard rumours of the illicit affair between Vikram and a woman. “Deepika was under stress and used to have arguments with her husband about his alleged affair,” he said. On Saturday night, Deepika the couple had once again argued over his “extra-marital affair”, during which they had gone to the balcony of their flat in tower T-3 of the society, when Vikram and his girlfriend had pushed Deepika off the balcony, alleged Ahuja.

“Six months ago, around the time Deepika gave birth to the boy, Vikram got into an affair with another woman who is a neighbour,” said Ahuja in his police complaint, adding, “When Deepika raised a storm over this relationship, Vikram beat her up.” He also said that the couple had fought over the affair on Saturday, when Vikram lost control and pushed Deepika off the balcony.

Anuj Mishra, president of Ansal Valley View RWA, said security guards and other residents rushed to the spot when they heard a loud thud, and found Deepika’s body lying in a pool of blood. “I got a call around 10.30pm. We rushed to the spot and informed police,” said Mishra, adding that by the time police had reached and rushed the victim to hospital, she had succumbed to her injuries.

Cops handed over Deepika’s body to her family on Sunday after autopsy. Sub-inspector Vinay said an FIR under Section 302 (murder) was registered against Vikram. “The victim’s father accused Vikram of killing her daughter due to an extra-marital affair,” he said.
