38 file nominations for Phase I polls in 5 Assam seats

Guwahati: Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Congress deputy leader in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, are among the 38 candidates who have filed their nominations for five Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam that will go to the polls on April 19.

Wednesday was the last day for filing of nomination papers.

The constituencies that will go to the polls in the first phase are Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Kaziranga and Sonitpur, all in upper Assam. Among them, Kaziranga and Sonitpur were newly created following the delimitation exercise last year.

In 2019, BJP had won four upper Assam seats and Congress one (Kaliabor, which no longer exists)

The last day of filing of papers for the first phase of polls saw the highest number of nominations, 26. These included sitting BJP MP Topon Gogoi in Jorhat, Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa in Kaziranga and MLA Ranjit Dutta in Sonitpur. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma accompanied Gogoi and Tasa during the filing of nominations in Jorhat and Golaghat.

Participating in a roadshow in both places, Sarma said both the candidates will by a margin of over three lakh and help Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lead the nation for the third consecutive term.

While Gogoi’s opponent in Jorhat is Gaurav Gogoi, who filed his nomination on Tuesday, Tasa is pitted against Congress tea tribe woman leader Roselina Tirkey in Kaziranga.
