GUWAHATI: The carcass of yet another elephant calf was found in a village under the Kaliabor sub-division in Nagaon district on Monday, taking the death toll of jumbos in the state due to various reasons to 12 so far this year.

The forest department said the seven-year-old calf died of liver cirrhosis.

Forest range officer Nepal Mondol said it was undergoing treatment at the Kaziranga National Park for the past few months and had strayed outside the park in search of food before it was found dead. “After post-mortem, we came to know that the calf died of organ failure. Veterinarians confirmed liver cirrhosis as the cause of its death. It was suffering for the last several months and was being provided proper treatment under the supervision of wildlife staff,” Mondol said.

Mondol said they were earlier suspecting that the calf might have died on being knocked down by other elephants. “There were footprints of other adult elephants near the carcass of the jumbo. However, the autopsy ascertained liver cirrhosis as the cause of death,” he added.

Locals reportedly heard the trumpeting of a herd of four to five wild elephants on Sunday night, which also led them to suspect that the calf might have been crushed to death by the pachyderms.
