GUWAHATI: A Haj pilgrim from Assam's
Cachar district, Azizur Rahman, died in Mecca on Wednesday night. An octogenarian, Rahman was suffering from prolonged illness.
Official sources at the North East Haj Pilgrims Coordination Committee here said, "Rahman, who hailed from Hatikhal Bazar of Cachar district has died in Mecca last night. According to his family members, he was suffering from age-related health issues. He fell sick on Wednesday evening after which he was admitted to a hospital in Mecca. He passed away on Wednesday night."
Sources added that his final rites would be performed in Mecca. "Already his body has been handed over to his family members who are travelling with him. All the formalities have been also done and the Indian Haj Mission, the Consulate General of India in Jeddah has also been intimated about the death."
A total of 3,515 pilgrims from Assam flew to Saudi Arabia for haj last month. Besides, some 55 pilgrims from
Meghalaya
, 22 from
Nagaland
and four pilgrims from
Arunachal Pradesh
also travelled to Jeddah last month. Among all the Haj pilgrims from across the northeast, 1,162 are women.
As per official figures, this year the Haj Committee of India had received about 2,67,281 applications from across the country against its allotted quota of 1,23,900.
