BJP govt schemes helped 25 crore people escape poverty in 11 yrs: PM
Dibrugarh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted the emergence of a “neo-middle class” in India, announcing that 25 crore people have escaped poverty over the past 11 years due to his govt’s development initiatives.
Addressing a public rally in Namrup, after performing the Bhumi Pujan of a Rs 10,600-crore ammonia-urea fertiliser plant, Modi cited fresh data highlighting dramatic improvements in living standards among India’s poorest families, particularly in rural areas.
“The govt is moving forward with the mantra of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,’ and this vision has brought a major transformation to the lives of the poor,” Modi said. “In the past 11 years, 25 crore people have come out of poverty due to these efforts, and a neo-middle class has emerged in the country. This has been possible because the living standards of poor families have continuously improved in recent years,” he added.
The Prime Minister presented compelling statistics to illustrate this transformation, noting that material indicators of prosperity have spread rapidly through rural India. “Earlier, among the poorest families in villages, only one in ten had a bike, whereas now nearly half the families in villages own a bike or a car,” Modi said, highlighting the dramatic shift in household assets.
He emphasised that mobile phones have reached almost every household, while items like refrigerators — once considered luxuries — have become commonplace, finding their way into village kitchens across the country. Modi also noted that despite the widespread adoption of smartphones, television ownership in villages has actually increased, demonstrating rising aspirations and purchasing power.
“These changes did not happen on their own, but because the poor of the country are becoming empowered and even those living in remote areas are now benefiting from development,” the Prime Minister asserted, crediting govt policies for enabling this economic mobility.
Modi added that both the Union and state govts are committed to serving the poor, tribals, youth, and women, while working to end decades of violence in Assam and the northeast.
