A security source said sub-inspector Onkhomang Haokip was on duty at Chingphei village when he was shot in his head by suspected militants around 2 am, killing him on the spot.

Forty-year-old Haokip was part of the additional forces deployed at Chingphei after heavy firing and motar shelling in Khousabung and Khorentak on August 30 and 31. Altogether eight persons were killed in the areas.

Chingphei village is located beyond the buffer zone of Haotak Keirap Khullen village (in the foothills of Imphal valley). The Army is deployed in the buffer zone.

Haokip joined Manipur Police as an assistant sub-inspector and is survived by four children and wife. He hailed from Ukhrul district.

This attack comes a day after three tribals were gunned down by unidentified men in Kangpokpi on Tuesday morning. On September 8, three others were killed at Pallel in Tengnoupal district and over 50 injured.
