Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta confirmed that the recovered watch belonged to the Argentine footballer and was stolen from a safe in Maradona's Dubai home.

said Wazid Hussain, a resident of Sivasagar district, who worked as a domestic helper in the soccer star's home, had stolen the watch and he has been apprehended by the police. He said Hussain was in Dubai from 2016.

But a police case is yet to be registered in Assam as the state police are waiting for the

to react. Assam Police said Hussain was working in Maradona's Dubai home.

Mahanta said in a tweet that as informed through the Central Agency by the Dubai Police, Hussain had stolen the watch, signed by Maradona, and fled to Assam. "Today morning at 4:00AM we arrested Wazid from his residence in Sibsagar. The limited edition watch has been recovered from him...A costly Hublot watch... Maradona... Dubai... Assam Police Looks like random words, don't they? But today all these words came together nicely, stating a story of successful International Cooperation between #DubaiPolice and @assampolice.," he tweeted.

As per information available on the internet, the Sivasagar SP said the price of the normal edition of the watch is more than Rs 15 lakh. “It’s a very precious watch and the exact price cannot be assessed,” he said.

"This watch was a single edition one made especially for Maradona. A similar watch is available in the market but it is not special like this one," he added.

The police in Sivasagar were alerted by Assam Special DGP (law and order) GP Singh on Friday about the accused. "The information was that Wazid Hussain had escaped from Dubai with the belongings of Maradona. Based on the details shared with us, we launched the operation last night," said Roushan. He added that the exact time when the watch was stolen is not known.

Roushan said the accused was not in his Sivasagar residence during the raid but was found in his in-laws' home in Moranhat in nearby Charaideo district. The SP said the watch recovered by the police team was signed by Maradona and also mentions his trademark jersey number 10 and has the logo featuring him on the back.

The police said though investigation may lead to more recoveries. "The watch is only one of the belongings stolen. As per information, he (Hussain) worked at Maradona's house as a domestic helper. The accused is not cooperating with the police. We will work as per rule," said Roushan. No police case has been registered locally in Sivasagar yet, informed Roushan. "If Dubai Police want him, we will hand him over to them. Otherwise we will do our own investigation," he said.

Hussain's mother said her son snapped relations with them after his marriage in 2005. "He has not come home for quite some time," she said. According to her, Hussain came to Sivasagar around three months ago.
