Hailakandi devotee dies at Maha Kumbh stampede
Silchar: A 63-year-old man from Hailkandi town in Assam died in the Maha Kumbh stampede during the early hours of Wednesday. Niti Ranjan Paul, a prominent confectionery businessman from Hailakandi district, lost his life while attempting to take a holy dip at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj during Mauni Amavasya at 2.30 am on Wednesday, amid the presence of millions of devotees.Paul was transported to a nearby hospital with others, where he passed away during treatment, said family sources. The Assam govt has announced Rs 5 lakh as compensation for the bereaved family.Speaking to TOI on the phone on Wednesday afternoon, the deceased's brother, Tapas Paul, who was present during the incident, said they were awaiting necessary clearance from Uttar Pradesh authorities to transport the body to Hailakandi. He mentioned the possibility of conducting the last rites in Prayagraj if airlifting arrangements were delayed. Sources said Ranjan's eldest son has departed for Prayagraj to join the family.A group of devotees from Hailakandi, including Niti Ranjan Paul, his wife Gayatri Paul, brother Tapas and others, visited the Maha Kumbh under the guidance of the Bharat Sevashram Sangha.Hailakandi SP Leena Doley confirmed receiving notification of Paul's death from Uttar Pradesh Police.The news of his death rapidly spread throughout Hailakandi, leaving the town in mourning.
