DIBRUGAR: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while participating in the Moran Mahotsav at Makum in Tinsukia district on Sunday, announced that the Moran community people residing in Arunachal Pradesh will be granted permanent residential certificates (PRC) of Assam. He also assured the reservation of seats in competitive exams like the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) for the community. This move is aimed at ensuring that the Moran community in Arunachal Pradesh can access the same benefits and opportunities as those residing inside Assam.

The Moran community, recognised as one of the indigenous tribes of Assam, is primarily concentrated in the six upper Assam districts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur. However, a small segment of the community also resides in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lohit, Namsai and Changlang districts after migrating there decades ago.

Addressing the gathering at the Moran Mahotsav on Sunday evening, CM Sarma said, “The Moran people living in Arunachal Pradesh are lagging in various fields as they didn’t get certificates of indigenous people or permanent residents in the state. The Assam government will decide in a few days that the Moran community people living in Arunachal Pradesh will also be provided PRC of Assam.”

“The people living in Arunachal Pradesh will get the same rights as those living in Assam. From medical seats, jobs and in all areas they will get equal rights in Assam. This system will ensure that the Moran people wherever they are will be able to contribute to the progress of the state,” he added.

The CM also said, “This time we have decided to reserve seats in competitive exams like Assam Public Service Commission for Moran community candidates. From next year, we will see magistrates and DSPs (deputy superintendent of police) coming from the community.”
