DIBRUGARH: Legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika was remembered by his admirers at his birthplace, Sadiya, in Tinsukia district on his fifth death anniversary on Saturday.

Programmes were organized by various organizations to commemorate the day. The

Sadiya Sahitya Sabha

organized a 'shradhanjali' event which was attended by hundreds of people to pay homage to the maestro. A prayer session was also held. Earlier, a group of school students sang Hazarika's famous songs 'bistirna parore' and 'manuhe manuhor babe'.

The local units of All Assam Students' Union and Sadiya Silpi Samaj organized a programme at Rukmini Udyan in memory of the singer. At the Haripur village playground,

All Assam Scheduled Caste Association

organized an event in memory of the bard. A procession was taken out in the morning followed by a cultural programme by various ethnic communities.

"We take pride in the fact that a person of his stature had his roots in Sadiya. Bhupenda reigns in the hearts of everyone through his immortal compositions. The void he has left behind can never be filled. We request the BJP government to name the upcoming 9.15-km Dhola-Sadiya Bridge over the Brahmaputra after Hazarika," said Naren Das, the secretary of the organizing committee.

On September 8, 1926, the legendary musician was born in a far-flung village in Sadiya. He passed away in Mumbai on November 5, 2011. He was 85.
