Kokrajhar election results 2024 live updates: UPPL's Jayanta Basumatary wins

NEW DELHI: The constituency of Kokrajhar in Assam witnessed a closely contested election, with Joyanta Basumatary of the United People's Party, Liberal emerging victorious. Basumatary secured 488,995 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Kampa Borgoyari of the Bodoland Peoples Front, by a margin of 51,583 votes. Borgoyari received 437,412 votes.

Garjan Mashahary of the Indian National Congress finished a distant third with 113,736 votes, trailing the winner by 375,259 votes. Binita Deka of the Gana Suraksha Party secured 94,189 votes, while independent candidate Prithviraj Narayan Dev Mech obtained 33,737 votes.

Gauri Sankar Sarania of the All India Trinamool Congress received 23,519 votes, followed by independent candidates Ranjay Kr Brahma and Lalit Pegu of the Voters Party International, who garnered 8,830 and 7,932 votes, respectively. Jyotish Kumar Das, Triptina Rabha, Pankaj Islary, and Ajoy Narzary, all contesting as independents, secured 6,106, 4,540, 4,508, and 4,080 votes, respectively. The NOTA (None of the Above) option received 13,912 votes.

With the voting underway, UPPL's Jayanta Basumatary leads, while the Congress' Garjan Mashahary trails trails as per early trends.

The Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency is one of the fourteen parliamentary constituencies in the state of Assam. The polling day for Assam was scheduled for May 7, which is Phase 3 of the Lok Sabha elections.

The Election Commission of India announced the dates for the Lok Sabha elections on March 16.

The parliamentary seat of Kokrajhar recorded a voter turnout of 80.44%, according to data released by the Election Commission.

Established in 1952, the constituency holds significant political importance due to its predominantly Bodo population, shaping the region's electoral landscape. Reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST), Kokrajhar witnessed a notable political shift in 2014 when a non-Bodo MP was elected for the first time. It includes the assembly segments of Gossaigaon, Kokrajhar West(ST), Kokrajhar East(ST), Sidli(ST), Bijni, Sorbhog, Bhabanipur, Tamulpur, Barama(ST), Chapaguri(ST).

For the 2024 elections, the list of prominent candidates included representatives from various parties, with notable contenders like Jayanta Basumatary (UPPL), Kampa Borgoyari (BOPF), Gorjan Mashahary (Congress), and others vying for victory.

The date of counting and announcement of results for the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency is June 4.

In the 2019 elections, Naba Kumar Sarania, an independent candidate, secured victory in Kokrajhar with 484,560 votes, followed closely by Pramila Rani Brahma of the BOPF.

Similarly, the 2014 elections marked a significant milestone when independent candidate Naba Kumar Sarania, also known as Hira, clinched victory by a staggering margin of over three lakh votes, the largest victory margin in Assam's electoral history with Ukrao Gera Brahma securing the second spot.
