Security stepped up in upper Assam amid Ulfa-I boycott call for Independence Day
Dibrugarh: With banned militant group United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) calling for a complete boycott of Independence Day celebrations on Aug 15, security forces have heightened vigilance across upper Assam districts, anticipating possible disruptions by the proscribed outfit.Authorities have intensified security measures in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat districts — once considered strongholds of Ulfa (I). Intelligence reports suggest that these areas still harbour a significant number of youths sympathetic to the group's ideology. These individuals, often referred to as linkmen or overground workers (OGWs), allegedly provide logistical support to the outfit and have been known to assist in executing attacks during national events. The threat is not unfounded. In 2004, Ulfa orchestrated a bomb blast during an Independence Day parade at Dhemaji College, killing 18 people, mostly schoolchildren. The memory of that attack looms large as security agencies brace for potential violence.Recently, a crucial security review meeting was held in Dibrugarh on Aug 8 to assess preparedness in the five districts. Chaired by inspector general of police (security) Imdadul Bora, the meeting included top officials such as IGP (operations) Jitmol Doley, IGP (north east range) Satya Raj Hazarika, and Dibrugarh SSP Rakesh Reddy.Speaking on the security arrangements, Dibrugarh SSP Rakesh Reddy on Tuesday said, "Given the approaching 79th Independence Day celebrations, we have significantly enhanced security measures throughout the district to ensure peaceful festivities. Our primary objective is to create an environment where citizens can celebrate our nation's independence without any apprehension or fear."The SSP added that the comprehensive security strategy includes multiple layers of protection. Police checkpoints have been established at all entry and exit points, with intensive inspection drives targeting private and commercial vehicles as well as two-wheelers. Security forces have been specifically assigned to protect vital installations throughout the district, including oil and gas pipelines, power stations, transmission towers, major bridges, railway stations, airport, markets, and public gathering places."Security measures include intensified patrolling, night-domination exercises, and anti-sabotage checks at key locations. Beyond regular checkpoint operations, intensive patrols are being conducted along inter-district borders, highways, roads, railway tracks, bridges, and river embankments to maintain constant surveillance. River patrolling has also been stepped up," the SSP said.Special attention is being paid to high-risk areas, including the Dibrugarh airport, Bogibeel Bridge, railway stations, and industrial units — potential targets for militant activity. The Khanikar parade ground, the official venue for Independence Day events in Dibrugarh, has also been fortified with multiple layers of security.
