Dibrugarh: Sivasagar traffic police on Saturday seized motorcycles fitted with illegal modified exhaust pipes and crushed more than 20 such silencers with a road roller at the Sivasagar Police Station premises, drawing widespread appreciation from residents.
The drive targeted motorcycle owners who had illegally fitted modified silencers that produce excessively loud, jarring sounds, causing considerable disturbance. The motorcycles were intercepted and seized by traffic police personnel during the operation. The illegal exhaust pipes were removed from the bikes on the spot, after which they were run over and crushed by a road roller at the police station premises.
The owners of the seized motorcycles were fined on the spot for violating motor vehicle regulations. The use of a road roller to destroy the seized pipes sent a strong message to those who modify their vehicles in contravention of the law.
A traffic police official said the action was part of a concerted effort to restore peace and order on the roads of Sivasagar. “Modified exhaust pipes are illegal and cause serious noise pollution. They disturb residents, patients, the elderly, and tourists alike. We will continue this drive and take strict action against anyone found using such pipes on public roads,” the official said.
The crackdown has drawn strong praise from residents of Sivasagar, who said the menace of loud modified exhausts had been a source of persistent irritation. “These bikes make an unbearable noise. It is a relief that the police have finally taken such decisive action. We hope this continues,” said Atanu Borah, a resident.
The action carries added significance given Sivasagar’s status as one of Assam’s premier tourist destinations.
Residents said noise pollution from illegal exhaust was particularly damaging to the town’s image as a tourist destination. “Tourists come here to experience history and culture, not to be deafened by modified bikes. This crackdown is long overdue and very welcome,” said a hotel owner in the town.
The Sivasagar traffic police have indicated that such enforcement drives will be carried out regularly in the future.
