Dibrugarh: Paving way for the BJP, the executive committee of the Congress-led Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council (SKAC) tendered its resignation on Saturday. The ruling Congress was reduced to a minority with 11 members in the 26-member council after three of its members joined BJP along with two Independents on June 24. BJP's strength increased to 15 from 10. The chief executive councillor (CEC) Dandi Sonowal and nine executive members on Saturday tendered their resignations to SKAC principal secretary and additional deputy commissioner Hemanta Kumar Das at the council's office in Dibrugarh.
The chairman of SKAC, Tankeswar Sonowal, executive member Ghanakanta Saikia and a general member, Biswajit Sonowal from Congress, had already switched their allegiance.
Two Independents, Diprekha Das Baghri and Khanindra Sonowal, had also joined the saffron party the same day.
The BJP-led new executive body of the council will assume charge on July 4.
