Snatcher injured in police shooting after knife attack

Guwahati: A notorious snatcher, who assaulted a woman on Monday evening at Banphool Path in Hatigaon Chariali, was injured in a police shooting late on Tuesday night after he allegedly attacked a police officer.
Bijoy Duwarah, the OC of Hatigaon Police Station, said the accused, identified as Jewel Khan, allegedly attacked Biju Sharma, an elderly woman, with a knife in an attempt to steal her bag. "The woman sustained grievous injuries and had to be admitted to a private hospital. Khan was with one of his accomplices during the incident," the OC said.
The officer also said Khan was staying in Sijubari's Navjyoti Path. The police raided Khan's residence and found two ATM cards, but he managed to flee upon noticing the police.
However, the officers tracked Khan based on reliable input. When he attempted to flee, he charged at one of the officers with a knife, forcing the police to shoot him in self-defence. "He was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) around 7:30-8:00pm on Tuesday for necessary treatment, and we have registered a case against him," the officer said.
DCP (East) Mrinal Deka, speaking to the press on Wednesday, said Khan had a history of involvement in several criminal activities, particularly those related to property offences.
He revealed that multiple cases had been filed against Khan at both the Hatigaon and Dispur police stations previously, highlighting his ongoing criminal activities in the region. "An investigation is underway, as we have identified his accomplices, and efforts are being made to apprehend them," the DCP added.
