GUWAHATI: A 40-year-old Adivasi woman was first attacked with sharp weapons and then burnt alive in Assam's Sonitpur district on suspicion of being involved in practising witchcraft, the police said on Monday.

The police have arrested five out of six accused involved in the murder on Monday. The arrested accused are Ajay Sangna, Pinku Malhar, Suraj Baghuwar, Dhiraj Baghuwar and Baila Sanghar. The police are yet to arrest the sixth accused, Babul Nagdhar, who is on the run.

In-charge of Bebejia police outpost under the Tezpur police station Diganta Saikia said the incident took place at around 9 pm on Sunday at the Bahbari village in front of the husband of the deceased woman.

"The accused are the neighbours of the couple. The accused have been identified by the husband of the deceased woman. They had a suspicion that the woman was involved in the practice of witchcraft. The village is not a backward place but yes, it seems that the people there are superstitious," he added.

Woman murdered in October over witchcraft
The police, on being informed by locals, recovered the body lying on the floor soaked in blood. The body was sent to the Tezpur Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination. The arrested accused will be produced before a local court on Tuesday.

In October, a middle-aged woman - Manju Nag - was allegedly murdered by a 45-year-old man on suspicion of practising witchcraft at Hirajuli Tea Estate under the jurisdiction of Dhekiajuli police station in Sonitpur district.
