DAVANAGERE: A girl and a boy, both second-year college students in Davanagere, allegedly died by suicide on Saturday after an intimate video featuring the duo went viral on social media.
According to reports, while the girl was the first to take her life, the distraught boy took the extreme step upon hearing the news about her death.
Sources said about two months ago, while the two students were together on the terrace of their first-grade government college, some unidentified person or persons had shot their video without their knowledge.
The 3.21-minute clip went viral on social media on Friday. When contacted by TOI, K Arun, the superintendent of police (SP), Davanagere, confirmed that separate complaints had been filed by the families and that an inquiry was under way to identify those responsible for shooting the objectionable video.
The police officer refused to share any further details about the investigation and the identities of the students. Meanwhile, some parents have expressed their concern over the deaths of the two students and said they were worried about the well-being of their children.
This incident comes close on the heels of another raging controversy in the state in which three girl students at a college in Udupi have been accused of placing a camera-phone in their college washroom, with the alleged intention of recording a video clip of one of their collegemates – also a girl. While that incident is still being probed by the authorities and the three students have been suspended from college, the twin-suicide in Davanagere has come as a rude shock.
