BELAGAVI: A large crocodile entered a house in Darga village of Athani taluk, close to the river Krishna, in the early hours of Sunday. According to local sources, the family woke up to a goat bleating and were shocked to see the crocodile inside their house. They captured the animal with the help of their neighbours and handed it over to the forest department.
Forest department sources say crocodiles come out of rivers looking for food when the river water dries up.
‘It attacked goat’Prakash Thammanna Sanadi, the owner of the house where the crocodile was seen, said his family woke up around 3am, following the noise of a baby goat. “The crocodile bit the leg of the goat. We immediately rescued the goat. After this, some youths from the neighbourhood came in,” he said .
Umar Mullah, a local youth, said the villagers learned that a crocodile had entered Sanadi's house. “So we started an operation to capture it. Finally, we tied the crocodile using ropes to a tree and informed the forest department. Staff came to the spot in the morning and took the crocodile into their custody. The crocodile was about 12 feet long and weighed more than a quintal,” he said.
It is common for crocodiles and aquatic animals to come out looking for food when the water level in the river falls, he said.
