Overcrowded living: In this govt hostel, 136 female students share a single hall

Kalaburagi: A total of 136 girl students of Ambedkar Hostel in Turvihal in Sindanur taluk in Raichur district have been staying in a single hall as the hostel is being run from a rented building. Earlier, the hostel was located in a food grain stocking shed.The present building does not have separate rooms and the girls are forced to share space in the single hall that is available. People in Turvihal ask how can the girls study in a huge hall as they have to face constant noise from other students.This hostel, being run under the social welfare department from a rented building does not have any proper amenities. Earlier, it was run from a rented building in Maski town and shifted to Turuvihal from 2023-24 academic year.The building has only 5 toilets and 5 bathrooms which are not in usable condition, says a parent. Toilets stink and are in a very horrible state.Speaking to STOI, hostel warden Gangappa said that the building owner has assured them of constructing more toilets and bathrooms during the summer holidays. He said there are two halls in the building but one hall is locked which will be opened after some minor repairs.The 136 students residing in a single hall say they cannot study properly and opine that if they had separate rooms accommodating 20 to 25 students, it would be manageable.
