Revamped Hubballi fish market all set to open soon
Hubballi: The redeveloped fish market in Hubballi, taken up under the Smart City Mission, is expected to become operational within two days.
Built at a cost of Rs 5.6 crore, the market has been developed across an area of 1,290 square metres and is now finally set to serve vendors and customers after a long wait. Although the facility was inaugurated in Feb 2023, it remained unused for more than a year as fish vendors were reluctant to move into the new premises.
For months after the inauguration, the authorities attempted to bring the market into use through tender and auction processes. However, fish vendors showed little interest in shifting their businesses to the renovated complex and continued operating from the roadside in Ganesh Peth. Their hesitation delayed the formal launch of the market and left the newly built infrastructure idle, despite the investment made for its redevelopment.
The situation has now changed following discussions between officials and the fish vendors. After several rounds of engagement, the vendors have agreed to relocate their businesses to the dedicated fish market. This development has cleared the way for the market to begin functioning as originally intended. According to officials, around 38 fish vendors, including wholesalers, are expected to shift their operations to the new facility.
The opening of the market is expected to bring better organisation to fish trading in the area and improve convenience for both traders and buyers. The renovated market has been equipped with essential amenities designed to support daily business activity in a cleaner and more structured environment. These include water connection, an overhead tank, electricity supply, parking space and storage facilities.
Ilyas Maniyar, corporator of the area, said with vendors now ready to move in, the market is likely to reduce roadside trading in Ganesh Peth and help streamline fish sales in a designated commercial space.
Rudresh Ghali, commissioner, HDMC, said the shift was expected to benefit vendors through improved working conditions while also offering customers a more organised and accessible marketplace for purchasing fish.
He said there are a total of 36, and two more kattas would be ready. The vendors would shift their business on Friday morning. "The rent for each katta varies from Rs 4,300 to Rs 4,800 per month and a deposit of Rs 50,000 for each," he added.
