With only 11.7 tmcft left, Tungabhadra water diversion sparks concern
Koppal: Amid growing concerns over depleting water levels in the Tungabhadra reservoir at Munirabad in Koppal taluk, allegations have surfaced that water is being diverted to industries, including through unauthorised means. The Tungabhadra reservoir currently holds only 11.7 tmcft of water, which is essential to meet drinking water requirements across four riparian districts. With storage at a critical level, concerns have grown over its allocation and usage.Despite the limited availability, allegations have surfaced that water is being diverted for industrial use. Factories are reportedly installing large pumps to extract water, while some industries in and around Koppal taluk are said to be receiving supply unauthorisedly.ORK Reddy, secretary of the Tungabhadra Board, said instructions have already been issued to factories to stop operating motors. However, he added that a significant quantity of water continues to be diverted to industries.According to Purushottamagouda, president of the Tungabhadra Raitha Sangha in Hosapete, factories are permitted to use water only till Dec every year and are not supposed to operate irrigation pumps thereafter. He alleged that these norms are being violated every year, with officials and elected representatives fully aware of the situation. The Tungabhadra reservoir, considered the lifeline for four districts, had only 11.7 tmcft of water on April 24. With inadequate rainfall, concerns have risen over drinking water availability. Despite this, water continues to be drawn by industries.Residents and farmers in the riparian region have expressed anger over the alleged unauthorised diversion of water to factories, blaming irrigation department officials. As per norms, industries are allowed to draw water only when there is surplus availability and only until February. However, farmer leaders allege violations with the connivance of officials.Koppal deputy commissioner Suresh B Itnal said no one is currently using water reserved for drinking purposes. He added that instructions have been issued to stop water supply to industries, noting that while rules exist for industrial supply, directions have been given to halt it in view of the intense summer and to prioritise essential needs. It may be recalled that for 2025-26, water was allocated for only one crop due to the replacement of all 33 crest gates of the Tungabhadra reservoir. Concerns are growing that residents may face water shortage in the coming days.
