2 kin of woman get life term in Saroornagar honour killing case

HYDERABAD: In the sensational Saroornagar honour killing case of last year, a woman’s brother and brother-inlaw were awarded life sentence by a local court on Friday for murdering her husband in front of her and in full public glare on a busy road. The couple’s inter-faith marriage was opposed by the girl’s family.

On May 4 last year, the accused waylaid B Nagaraju (25) while he was going with Ashrin Sulthana on a bike and attacked him with a rod and knife. Nagaraju, who was a Dalit, worked as a sales executive. The couple had married in an Arya Samaj ceremony.

Ashrin’s brother Syed Mobin and brother-in-law Mohammed Masood were convicted for murder and violation of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, DCP (LB Nagar) B Sai Sri said during a press conference on Friday. Prior to the murder, the accused had tried twice to kill Nagaraju and but failed due to heavy traffic.

The murder was caught on CCTV where Ashrin was seen crying and pleading with the accused to spare her husband. The video had gone viral on social media. After nabbing the accused, cops requested the government to set up a fasttrack court to try the case. As many as 11 eye-witnesses and a total 63 prosecution witnesses were cited in the chargesheet.
