HC directs T to ensure no illegal cow slaughter
Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Wednesday directed the state government and its police, revenue and animal husbandry officials to take all steps to prevent any illegal cow slaughtering on Thursday in connection with Bakrid and to ensure that the provisions of the Telangana Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act, 1977, are strictly implemented. A bench of Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice N Tukaramji gave this directive while taking up a letter written by Yuga Thulasi foundation chairman K Siva Kumar as a writ petition. The petitioner had sought court intervention on the ground that the state was not implementing the Act in its letter and spirit and that the animals, including cows, are being transported into the state for slaughtering without following norms. The bench directed chief secretary (CS) and DGP to see there is no violation of the Act. Advocate general BS Prasad said the police have established several check posts to prevent illegal transportation and slaughtering. As the letter had reached the court just a day before Bakrid, the bench pulled up G L Narasimha Rao, counsel for the petitioner, for dragging the court into a festival involving a large number of people at the last minute and said: “When the law is there, you should have moved the court with details of violations or inaction much before.” While adjourning the case to August 2, the police were asked to take steps to maintain law and order. The bench directed CS and DGP to file their reports by the next date of hearing indicating way they implemented the Act. Bench appealed to people to celebrate festival in its true spirit keeping in view sentiments of people of all faiths.
