Hyderabad Metro’s big upgrade: Six-coach trains, faster rides to end commuter chaos soon

Currently, only one coach is reserved for women. Commuters requested at least two reserved compartments with the addition of more coaches. Officials hope this will encourage more female ridership and enhance passenger safety, particularly during peak hours, while also improving inclusivity in Hyderabad Metro services.

HMRL plans to procure 40–60 new coaches after detailed assessment of passenger numbers and operational feasibility. The coaches will not be added to existing trains but used to form new train sets. Officials stated that the coaches could take up to two years to arrive after orders are placed. Discussions are still preliminary, and procurement will begin once the takeover from L&T, the current majority stakeholder, is complete. This indicates a phased approach to Metro capacity expansion.
