HYDERABAD: The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Hyderabad is set to acquire ultrashort pulse laser technology, said scientists from TIFR. The laser technology first made headlines in 2018 when two scientists won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their research on exploring the utility of the technology.
It has the capacity to produce 10 to the power of 15 watts of power, something that no other power source in the world is capable of doing. Once acquired, TIFR would become only the second organisation in the country to possess the laser technology after the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT) in Indore.
“Think of a light bulb in your home emitting light and imaginethat light and intensity increased by one quadrillion times; that's how much power this technology can generate,” said Prashant Singh, a scientist at the institute specialising in Laser Physics. Scientists from the institute said this advanced technology would help a great deal in expanding the scope of their research and also help open up new fields of study in the domain of science.
“The laser technology has the power to ionise any element on earth, which is something no other technology is capable ofdoing. With this technology, we can now look into astrophysics and particle physics in detail, areas where our research has so far been limited,” Singh added.
Aside from being a crucial addition in the context of sciencerelated research, the laser technology could also prove to be a game-changer for other fields.
“Take cancer treatment, for example. Currently, the laser technology used in chemotherapy and radiotherapy that hospitals use to cure takes time to reach the cancer cells and also sometimes leads to side effects as the surrounding healthy cells also get affected. With the laser technology, cancer treatment will not only become quicker, but the technology will be able to reach the cells with more precision,” Singh added.
The equipment is expected to reach the institute in early 2026.
