People do their bit for a greener city

HYDERABAD: Several green initiatives in the city marked World Environment Day on Tuesday. From planting trees to pledging to reduce plastic waste, the city saw the participation of people from all walks of life.


As part of the celebration,

Heartfulness Institute

carried out a two-day tree plantation drive in association with Google employees and officer trainees of Telangana Forest Academy. The institute will plant over 300 plants of 150 rare and threatened species of typical rainforest trees.

Giving details about the initiative, Heartfulness trainer and an editor of '

Rainforest Conservation of India

', Dr Ramakantha said, "for the third time in a row, Google India Team from Hyderabad is participating in the tree plantation drive on June 5 and 6 at Kanha Shantivanam. The initiative involves planting of saplings."

The institute has also embarked upon a mission to create rainforests in the state besides planting, adopting and nurturing over 10 million trees across the country this year.

ITC Kakatiya also observed World Environment Day by pledging to reduce plastic use at the hotel. As part of the efforts to save environment, the hotel removed plastic straws from all its restaurants and introduced biodegradable straws. The staff of ITC Kakatiya also went on a cleanliness drive near a housing society in

Kundanbagh

and removed garbage.

A tree plantation drive was organised at the

University of Hyderabad

. The drive was carried out by the horticulture office of the UoH, in association with the State Bank of India and WILD LENS group.

The drive took place near the administration building. The employees of KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad, also administered an oath on avoiding use of plastic.
