Prisoners in Telangana to get freedom from washing own clothes

HYDERABAD:

Prisoners in Telangana jails

will bid adieu to the toil of washing clothes and bedsheets.

Telangana prisons department

has provided washing machines to all 12 major prisons. The limited washing machine laundry facility was available only in central prisons till now.

Chanchalguda Central Prison

superintendent, Arjun Rao, told TOI, “The department has supplied 15 kg and 60 kg washing machines to all three central prisons in Chanchalguda, Cherlapally and Warangal as well as district jails in Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Sangareddy, Karimnagar, Khammam, Adilabad and Nizamabad.


“So far, we have 10 kg washing machines available only in central prisons, which convicts use to wash their own clothes and bedsheets. Undertrials use the limited laundry facility or depend on the convicts to wash their clothes. Now, the central and district laundry facility is available for both convicts and undertrials.”


The department has spent around Rs 7 lakh to Rs 8 lakh on each jail.

“We are also giving washing powder or soda to the prisoners. There are around 1,100 prisoners on an average in Chanchalguda central prison and they can wash clothes on any day.

Arjun Rao said that there is no staff in the jail to do the laundry.
