HYDERABAD: Rangareddy tops the district-wise per capita income (PCI) at 8.15 lakh, followed by Hyderabad at 4 lakh and Sangareddy at third position with 3.08 lakh, the planning department said in a recent report titled ‘Telangana Economy-2023’.

The report said 14 districts out of 33 have more than 2 lakh PCI, while the rest of the districts have lesser income with Vikarabad standing at the bottom with a lowest income of 1.5 lakh.

Karimnagar, Mancherial, Warangal, Jangaon, Nagarkurnool, Nirmal, Adilabad, Mulugu and Wanaparthy have PCI between 1.98 lakh and 1.7 lakh at the current price. Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Sircilla, Gadwal, Narayanpet, Jagtial, Asifabad and Hanumakonda have PCI between 1.7 lakh and 1.5 lakh.

What does it mean to have a higher PCI? Experts say that more service-oriented and income-generating opportunities are concentrated in a particualr area and suggest a deeper analysis of PCI as the gap between districts is too vast in terms of PCI.

“The IT hub and all other activities are moving towards the western parts of Hyderabad, towards Rangareddy. It reflects high in the PCI. Hyderabad has still some less developed areas. There is difference between Hyderabad and Rangareddy as well,” T Sampat, assistant professor in Telangana University, Nizamabad, told TOI.

He said that it is good in a way that high income from one or two particular areas is distributed in terms of welfare measures or creating infrastructure to generate more jobs.

However, experts warn that PCI cannot be a comprehensive indicator of the financial situation and economic well-being of people.

“PCI can certainly give a feel-good factor but to know the income inequalities, it is the Gini coefficient. It measures the inequality among the values of a frequency distribution, such as levels of income. States must undertake this exercise and also see that income inequalities are assessed properly to address them,” Krishna Reddy Chittedi, assistant professor, School of Economics, University of Hyderabad, said.
