The police have written six letters to college managements with regards to 20 students who were caught for drunk driving. Sources in Cyberabad police said identity of the erring students would be kept anonymous at all costs while communicating the same to the college managements. “We will not disclose the names of students. The purpose of providing information to the

colleges

is to make sure that they are aware of the activities of the students. This is primarily being done as a deterrence to ensure that colleges also be pro-active in stop students from indulging in drunken driving,” a senior official told TOI.

Cyberabad police have so far sent 500 and odd letters to various corporates about their employees after they were caught for drunk driving. A senior cop said the practice of informing the employer is being done for both government and private employees to discourage them from consuming liquor and driving.

Soon after the exercise was launched in January, police had decided to issue letters in case of motorists caught for blood alcohol count (BAC) exceeding above 30 mg/100 ml.

With police writing letters to HR wings in corporates, several companies, who are part of Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC), have decided to take disciplinary action like cutting the employees’ increments. Telangana state Transco has also issued a circular to its employees not to indulge in drunk driving.

However, members of the legal fraternity, were divided on the issue. “If educational institutions are alerted about students getting caught for drunk driving, it’s laudable since students need to be corrected at a young age. But informing an employer about his employee is a double whammy,” senior lawyer G Gurumurthy told TOI.

He further said, “When the drunk drivers are being punished by courts, where is the necessity to inform the employer.”
