36 Manipur professors shuffled between valley and hill districts

GUWAHATI: The Manipur government initiated on Wednesday the transfer of 36 associate and assistant professors between the hill and valley districts, in a move aimed at restoring normalcy in the state’s colleges amid ongoing sectarian strife.

The ethnic violence has severely impacted the state’s education sector, disrupting the regular functioning of colleges.

According to an official order issued by the governor, 20 Meitei associate and assistant professors have been transferred from Presidency College in Kangpokpi and Churachandpur College in Churachandpur. They have been posted to various colleges in the valley, including Imphal, Nambol, Thoubal, and Lilong.

The order states that the services of 16 associate and assistant professors will be utilised at their current places of residence. This means that their services will be employed at government colleges near their current locations, without being transferred to their original place of posting.

Among these faculty members, nine Meiteis, who were originally posted in colleges in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi, will now serve in their current places of residence at Kakching, Imphal, Moirang, and Thoubal.

The services of seven assistant professors, who are Kukis and were posted in colleges in Imphal, Porampat, and Kakching, will be utilised in Churachandpur College and Presidency College in Kangpokpi.

The development follows the measures taken in June, such as allowing Meitei students from the first batch of Churachandpur Medical College to attend classes at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal, and permitting Kuki students from Imphal to join classes in Churachandpur.
