Cocomi withdraws social boycott of Manipur govt

Imphal: The Co-ordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (Cocomi) on Wednesday announced that it will withdraw the social boycott of Manipur government. During a media briefing held at its Lamphel office, coordinator Jeetendra Ningomba said, “On August 6, Cocomi took a decision to boycott the government for turning a blind eye to the ongoing unrest and violence.” He informed the people that the Manipur government has invited the committee to discuss and assist in the swift implementation of NRC, the resettlement of affected and displaced persons and related issues. He further stated that the decision to socially boycott the government resulted in nothing positive.

NHRC issues notice to Manipur govt over reported killing of 13 people

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that at least 13 people were killed in a gun fight in Leithao village near Saibol in Tengnoupal, Manipur, on Monday. The incident, as reported, indicates a lapse on the part of the law-enforcing agencies and the forces deployed to ensure peace, law and order in the state, the NHRC stated. Accordingly, it has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Manipur calling for a detailed report in the matter within two weeks.

Akbar in chair, BJP MLAs boycott oath ceremony

BJP MLAs boycotted the oath-taking ceremony in the Telangana assembly to protest against AIMIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi being made the protem speaker. They accused the Congress government of appeasement politics and alleged a secret pact between Congress and AIMIM during the assembly elections. The MLAs submitted a representation alleging violations of norms in appointing the protem speaker. Telangana BJP state president G Kishan Reddy claimed that Congress is trying to woo AIMIM by appointing Akbaruddin as pro-tem speaker.

Manipur student abducted by militants, rescued

Manipur police rescue 22-year-old student Laishram Chinglen Singh from the hostel of DM College of Science in Imphal. Eight suspected cadres of militant outfit KCP-PWG are arrested for the abduction. The abductors had demanded Rs 15 lakh ransom, threatening to kill the student. Police confiscate a cache of arms and munition, including an AK-47 rifle and a samurai sword during the rescue mission.
