4 commandos among 5 hurt in fresh Manipur flare-up

Imphal: Hours after unidentified men gunned down a village guard in Manipur’s Imphal West district, suspected militants attacked a state police outpost in Moreh town bordering Myanmar in which four commandos were injured while another village guard was wounded in a bomb attack at Tumukhong village in Imphal East district on Sunday morning, dampening New Year’s eve in the restive state.
Police sources said suspected militants launched the attack on a commando outpost at Moreh Turelwangma Leikai on Saturday midnight with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), mortars and automatic rifles. The cops retaliated. The gunfight continued till 2am.
The injured police commandos — Diliangam Komson, M Priyokumar, N Borjao and M Sunil — were immediately rushed to the hospital of a nearby Assam Rifles (AR) camp, before being brought to Imphal for further treatment. They are said to be out of danger.
The Biren Singh-led government has enhanced state security deployment at Moreh where some houses were set ablaze on Saturday night.
The Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal (KIT), an apex body of Kukis in the district, accused the police commandos of torching the houses.
