Cuffs on 12 for beating up ‘drunk’ woman in Imphal

Imphal: At least 12 women have been arrested in connection with the thrashing of a young woman, a video of which has gone viral on social media.The accused were produced before the chief judicial magistrate court (Imphal West) on Wednesday, which remanded them in police custody for three days.The 12 women, all from different parts of the valley districts, mostly Imphal East, were arrested on Tuesday following a suo motu FIR case lodged at Imphal police station under sections 326/354/506/34 IPC and 66E IT Act, 2000.A police report seeking custody remand of the accused for some days before the court said in the viral video, the victim was “mercilessly beaten” by men and women suspected to be members of a group, “Huiyen Mamom”, on charges of celebrating New Year’s Eve and New Year by consuming alcohol/liquor.

A 42-year-old woman with an alcohol addiction was found dead in her Shadnagar residence. The previous day, an 18-year-old video of her son beating her and attempting to strangulate her had gone viral. The son discovered her dead the next morning. The woman and her son had been fighting over money for alcohol, with the son beating her on multiple occasions. The cause of death is still under investigation.
