IMPHAL: Popular fashion designer of Manipur, Kumarjit Laishram, was shot in the leg by unidentified gunmen in Imphal West district's Khumbong area, police said. The Koireng group of the proscribed UNLF claimed responsibility for the shooting, saying Kumarjit was punished for his involvement in unethical activity of "supplying women to high-profile people" in the state.
Kumarjit, 30, a resident of Takyel Khonbal Maning Leikai, also runs a beauty salon and spa close to his house.
Sources said he was kidnapped by the assailants on Friday night and was found with a bullet wound in his left calf near the Khumbong community health centre around 8.40am on Saturday.
He is undergoing treatment at a hospital here. Police registered a case in the matter and have begun an investigation.
With Saturday's shooting, four people, including two women, have so far been shot, all in their leg, in the Valley districts by unknown armed men since the beginning of this month. This poses a challenge to the law and order situation in the state which is already embroiled in a simmering communal conflict.
