IMPHAL: Manipur police dismissed the accusations made by a Kuki organization claiming that security forces collaborated with insurgent groups in Moreh town, where recent incidents of violence were reported.

The town, situated on the border with Myanmar, has been a focal point of tension, with the state government asserting that trouble in the northeastern state is being incited by miscreants from the neighboring country.

"The claims made by the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) and the Kuki Inpi Manipur, suggesting collaborations with valley-based insurgent groups and Meitei militants disguised as security force personnel in Moreh, are unfounded. The allegations lack merit and are deceptive," stated the police.

On January 17, two police commandos lost their lives in militant attacks in Moreh, with several others sustaining injuries.

Kuki organizations claimed that surrendered valley-based insurgents were permitted to "mingle freely" with the state police.

Since May of last year, Manipur has experienced ethnic tensions, resulting in the loss of over 180 lives.

Violence broke out on May 3 following a 'Tribal Solidarity March' organized in the hill districts to oppose the Meitei community's call for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Comprising approximately 53% of Manipur's population, Meiteis primarily inhabit the Imphal Valley, while tribals, encompassing Nagas and Kukis, make up 40% and predominantly reside in the hill districts.
