Manipur floods: Schools to remain shut till Saturday

Imphal: As Manipur continued to reel under severe floods, state govt on Thursday extended holidays for schools for another two days till Saturday, reports K Sarojkumar Sharma.

So far, two people lost their lives due to the devastating floods and over 2000 people have been evacuated and moved to safer locations and relief camps, officials said.

Vast tracts of low lying areas across the state, mostly in the twin capital districts of Imphal East and Imphal West, have been inundated for the past couple of days after major rivers overflowed and breached their embankments owing to heavy downpour.

A large chunk of land in Imphal East has been submerged since the early hours of Thursday after Kongba river and Imphal river breached the banks at Juvraj Palli and Bashikhong areas respectively. Govt agencies have stepped up rescue work at the affected areas across the state.

On the other hand, the breached site of Imphal river embankment at Singjamei Oinam Thingel was mended by govt agencies with support from local volunteers on Thursday.
