Manipur will go to the polls in two phases — February 27 (Sunday) and March 3 — to elect 60 legislators. All the 20 Scheduled Tribe reserved seats in the hill districts area are predominantly Christian.

The All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM), said tribals constitute around 43% of the state’s population and for Christians, “Sunday is a day that is holy and sacred and is also a day for rest and worship”.

The union urged the Election Commission to reschedule the polling date of the first phase to any other convenient date that does not fall on Sunday.

Echoing ATSUM, the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), a conglomerate of the Kuki community of the state said fixing the poll date on February 27 which falls on Sunday has “raised serious objections and complaints while it is bound to hurt the religious sentiments”.

And under such circumstances, many voters will be prevented from exercising their adult franchise, it said, while urging the state chief electoral officer to do the needful.
