Indore’s Dev makes a mark in England’s county cricket leagues
Indore: The city's young left-handed batsman, Dev Barnale, made a strong mark in England by signing with two clubs, Anson Cricket Club and Harrow Town Cricket Club, for their respective county cricket leagues. The Indore youngster, who once figured among India's junior team probables, impressed with consistent batting performances overseas, standing out against quality opposition.Dev, who earlier drew attention with a double century for Madhya Pradesh in the Cooch Behar Trophy, never found a place in the state senior squad. His talent, however, was noticed by English selectors who offered him contracts that allowed him to play in both Middlesex County Cricket League and Middlesex Premier Cricket League (MPCL).For Harrow Town CC, Barnale scored 460 runs in nine matches, batting at No. 3, while also contributing with part-time leg spin, claiming six wickets. Turning out for Anson CC in the MPCL, he added another 350 runs in seven matches, further underlining his ability to adapt to English conditions. Last season, Barnale made headlines with a quickfire century against Anson CC, which paved the way for his eventual signing.Reflecting on his experience, Barnale said that the stint in England was invaluable for his growth as a cricketer. "Playing against tall, fast bowlers in seaming conditions helped improve my game. The weather, grassy wickets, and relentless pace attacks tested my technique and temperament. Facing bowlers clocking around 130 kmph was a challenge, but it made me a better batsman," he said. The Middlesex League also gave him the opportunity to play alongside and against top-level international names. Indian wicketkeeper and batsman, KS Bharat, and West Indies' Devone Smith were among the stars who featured in the same competition. Dev admitted that observing and interacting with such seasoned cricketers enriched his understanding of the game.Former Ranji captain and Indore Divisional Cricket Association Secretary, Devashish Nilose, who has been mentoring Barnale, praised his natural ability. "He has the knack of handling pace effortlessly. Exposure to county cricket will only sharpen his skills further," Nilose said. With back-to-back strong seasons in England, Barnale has put Indore cricket on the international radar, showing that perseverance and talent can carve a path, even when opportunities at home are limited.
