Meenal decided to undergo the surgery owing to her profession and relationship with her male partner, who wanted her to come to the city for getting the surgery done. “My heart was beating in a

man

’s body for last 25 years. But since my childhood, I knew that I was a woman from within. I wanted to enjoy a married life with my partner like a normal woman. I am happy with my newfound femininity,” said Meenal.

Born a male, Meenal knew early on that she was different. “I used to play with dolls in my childhood and was attracted towards men. I shared my feelings with my family members but they refused to support me and forced me to behave like a man,” says Meenal. Mercilessly teased by other school children, she dropped out of school. But neither the beatings nor the harassment swayed her determination to become a woman. Taking advice from her friends, she took a couple of hormone injections. Discouraged by the lengthy procedure, she got her surgery done in New Delhi and now in Indore.

Initially, doctors removed her moustache and beard using laser followed by artificial breast implant. Then, they went for the sex change operation. The process of sex change is a two-year process. It involves counselling, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), voice therapy, breast implants or removal and SRS. “The person has to come for psychological counselling for three months. Legal documents saying that they are opting for the surgery also need to be drawn up,” says Dr Ashwini Dash, who performed the surgery with Dr Sumit Jaiswal.

Dr Dash said that it was the first time when a patient approached us from Delhi for such surgery. “When the patient approached us from Delhi for the surgery, we gave her a month’s time to rethink her decision. But after one month, she came to us with the same confidence,” he said.
