JAIPUR: The joy of getting discharged from a hospital and returning home turned into a tragedy for an 80-year-old man and his family after a truck fell on their SUV off a flyover near Kamla Nehru Nagar on Jaipur-Ajmer Expressway on Friday.
As the truck fell from a height of 30 feet on the SUV travelling below the flyover, the elderly man was crushed to death, while his two family members, his driver, and the truck driver and helper were seriously wounded. They were admitted to SMS Hospital, where some of them are battling for life.
The victim, Habib Ahmed (80), was a resident of Khadim Mohalla in Ajmer and had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Pratap Nagar for the past few days.
"After Habib recovered, his sons Mahboob and Hasan, and daughter-in-law Sahil were taking him home in an SUV. One Vipul Kumar was driving the car," said a police officer.
The officer said that the mishap occurred around 6 pm when the car reached Kamla Nehru Nagar on Ajmer Express Highway.
"A truck broke the boundary wall and fell off the flyover connecting Kamla Nehru Nagar to the highway. The height of the highway is nearly 30 feet. Habib died on the spot, while others got stuck inside the car," said the officer.
The officer added that the police roped in an earth moving machine to remove the truck from the car. They then towed the car away. The mishap caused a traffic jam on the highway for nearly two hours.
Habib's family members, his driver, the truck driver Tej Singh and helper Shambhu Singh are undergoing treatment at SMS Hospital.
"Either the truck developed some technical snag or the driver slept off. The height of the wall on both sides of the flyover is more than two feet. The truck broke the wall and then fell on the car in this freak mishap," said the officer.
