Bikaner woman alleges kidney removed during tubectomy
Jaipur: Police have initiated a probe into allegations by a 33-year-old woman from Bikaner that one of her kidneys was removed without her consent during a sterilisation procedure at a private hospital two years ago.
Radha Devi said Friday that she underwent a tubectomy at Jeevan Raksha Hospital in Bikaner on July 11, 2024. After suffering a bout of abdominal pain on April 16 this year, she consulted a doctor and underwent a sonography the following day.
According to her, the scan showed that her right kidney was missing.
“The doctor told me that my right kidney is absent, as shown in the sonography report. I got a repeat sonography just to be sure, and it showed the same result. Jeevan Raksha Hospital removed one of my kidneys,” Devi alleged.
“Right Kidney is not seen. Left kidney is normal in size,” her sonography report stated.
Devi’s husband, Fakeeraram, submitted a written complaint to Bikaner superintendent of police Mridul Kachhawa, accusing the hospital’s management and staff of misleading the couple into agreeing to the sterilisation procedure and alleging that the kidney was removed without consent during the operation. The family has sought a detailed investigation and action against those responsible.
Taking note of the allegations, the SP Kachhawa ordered an inquiry into the matter.
Jeevan Raksha Hospital denied the accusation, calling it medically baseless. Chief executive officer of the hospital, Pawan Choudhary, said the sterilisation surgery lasted only 5 to 10 minutes and that Devi was discharged around two hours later the same day.
The hospital maintained that if a kidney were removed, such rapid recovery and discharge would not have been possible.
“It is medically impossible to remove a kidney through the small incision used in a tubectomy. The claim is medically baseless and intended to damage the institution’s reputation,” Choudhary said.
“Some people are born with only one kidney, and the condition is often discovered accidentally during medical examination,” he added.
Police said they will now examine hospital records, operation-related documents and medical reports as part of the investigation.
