vigilantes
allegedly struck again in
Alwar
district near Haryana border on Monday. Around 5am, the police found two injured persons in a mini truck that had rammed into a house in Govindgarh area of the district. On searching, the police found two calves and three cows in the mini truck. The two injured were immediately rushed to Alwar’s district hospital. The two calves died in the accident and their post-mortem has been conducted.
Later, the injured people’s families complained that the two had been beaten up by a mob. The accident occurred while they were trying to escape the mob. However, the police ignored their complaint and instead registered an FIR against the two injured for
cow
smuggling under
Rajasthan Bovine Act.
“Prima facie it does not look like a case of mob lynching. We have not found any receipt from them for purchase of the bovines. A case has been registered against them under Rajasthan Bovine Act for cow smuggling. They met with an accident in the morning while transporting cows. We have admitted them to the hospital,” Deepak Kumar, assistant commissioner of police, Alwar (south) told TOI.
However, the relatives of the two injured showed receipt to the police issued by the
Jaipur Municipal Corporation
on Monday at 1.37am. On the receipt, it is written that the estimated cost of three cows and two calves is Rs 90,000. The JMC also collected Rs 600 as tax from the duo. The receipt was issued in the name of one Altaf, resident of Pahari of Bharatpur, who was one of the injured in the mini-truck.
“Wahid, a resident of Nuh (Haryana) and Altaf, resident of Pahari (Bharatpur) were in the vehicle. They were beaten up by cow vigilantes,” claimed Shokat, a relative of the injured. He also showed the receipt issued by JMC claiming that they were not cow smugglers and had bought the cows from a cattle market in Hatwara, Jaipur.
Despite Ashok Gehlot-led state government enacting a law to prevent mob lynching, such incidents are reported quite frequently.
