Man shoots wife at wedding function in Rajasthan and dies by suicide
ALWAR/JAIPUR: A 31-year-old man shot and critically injured his wife during a pre-wedding function in Bharatpur district Friday before turning the gun on himself and dying on the spot, police said.
The deceased was identified as Raghvendra Kumar Thakur, a resident of Baruar in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, and the injured woman as his 28-year-old wife, Radhika.
The incident took place around 12pm in Roopwas town of Bharatpur, where wedding ceremonies were underway at the woman's parental home. Police said Thakur shot himself in the chest after first firing at his wife. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Radhika sustained a gunshot wound in her chest and remains in critical condition. She was initially taken to a local hospital and later referred to RBM Hospital in Bharatpur. According to the latest reports, she was being shifted a second time to Jaipur for advanced treatment.
Investigators said Radhika had come to her parental home in Roopwas a few days ago to attend her cousin's wedding. Thakur, who had initially refused to attend the ceremony, reached his in-laws' house late Thursday night.
On Friday afternoon, the couple reportedly got into an argument in the middle of a family gathering. "Family members told us the two were arguing. Thakur then took Radhika into a room and bolted it from inside," said Roopwas SHO Vinod Meena. Moments later, relatives heard two gunshots. They broke the door open and found the couple lying in a pool of blood.
Police said blood was found splattered across the floor, and a crude country-made firearm was recovered from the room.
Investigators said the exact reason behind the argument was not yet known. While police have found no evidence of any ongoing marital dispute, some family members described Thakur, who worked as a cab driver in Agra, as short-tempered.
