RCA, HZL sign MoU for new Jaipur stadium construction
Jaipur: Taking a major leap forward towards speeding up the construction of the new cricket stadium near Chonp village in Jaipur, Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) signed an MoU with Vedanta's Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) for the first phase development at the SMS Stadium here on Thursday. HZL will invest 300 crore for the development of the world’s third-largest cricket stadium which will be named Anil Agarwal International Cricket Stadium, after Vedanta Resources Limited chairman. The MoU was signed by RCA secretary Bhawani Shankar Samota and Hindustan Zinc CEO Arun Misra. The stadium facilities will be spread across 100 acres and will have a seating capacity of over 75,000. Only Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium and Melbourne Cricket Ground have higher seating capacity. In terms of the size of the playing field, this stadium will be the largest in the world. The construction of the upcoming stadium will be carried out in two phases. A 40,000 capacity is set to be completed by October-November. The overall project of the first phase will cost 400 crore, out of which 300 crore will be borne by HZL and the remaining amount will be taken care of by RCA.Speaking on the occasion, Assembly speaker and RCA chief patron CP Joshi said that he hopes Vedanta will also support the second phase work. “The MoU would help accomplish the dream of construction of a modern international cricket stadium in the city. I thank Anil Agarwal and Priya Agarwal Hebbar (HZL chairperson and Vedanta Ltd non-executive director) for their support for the first phase work. I hope the next phase of the stadium will also be supported by Vednata,” Joshi said. The amount from the BCCI is yet to be received and Vaibhav Gehlot is continuously trying for it, he added. The Indian cricket board had promised to help with an infrastructure grant of 100 crore for the construction of the RCA stadium in July last year.RCA president Vaibhav Gehlot echoed Joshi’s sentiments. “I thank the Vedanta group and hope to receive similar support for the second phase. Also, I am grateful to the state government for their help and allottment of 100 acres of land for the stadium at concessional rates,” RCA president said.Talking about Vedanta and HZL’s commitment to create an environment for the country’s youth to flourish in sports, Hebbar said, “Cricket is a national passion. We are proud and privileged to have the opportunity to set up this world-class facility which will benefit players and spectators. India has huge potential as a sporting nation. We are committed to provide best-in-class environment for our country’s talent in sports.”She also assured support from HZL towards the construction of the second phase of the stadium with 35000 capacity. Moreover, Rajasthan Royals players and support staff including their head coach Kumar Sangakkara were also present at the MoU signing ceremony.
